Our Hobbit's Fingerless Gloves

This is Thorin writing, and I am going to share with you today a pattern for our hobbit’s gloves – the ones that he wears during the first part of our journey. I, of course, being a strong and hardy dwarf, prefer durable leather ones, but for all of the hobbits out there, this pattern is for you.

In the below picture, it may seem like the gloves are a deep metallic blue and have full length fingers, but if you watch this behind the scenes video (which I would highly recommend), you can see at about 59:38 their true color and shape.

     What you will need:

4 4 balls of Be Sweet Bamboo in the Dark Army color, or just three if you knit from both the outside and inside of each ball.

3 size 10 double pointed needles, or size necessary to obtain gauge.

· Stitch holder, or a pair of circular needles that you can slip stitches onto to hold them.

Gauge is 15 stitches and 25 rows in garter stitch for a 4” square when using size 10 needles.

Cast on 28 stitches to DPNS, and place marker.

Work 30 rows in garter stitch (knit one row, purl the next).

        Row 31: K3, *K2tog, K3, rep from * to end.

        Row 32: Purl across.

Row 33: K3, *Kfb, K3, rep from * to end.

Rows 34-43: Work in garter stitch.

Begin knitting side to side, and work eight more rows in garter stitch. Then join again at the beginning of the 41st row.

Rows 41-48: Work in garter stitch.

Slip all stitches to a stitch holder or circular needle pair. Pick up and knit 10 stitches evenly around thumb gusset, PM at the beginning of the row.

Thumb Rows 1-6: Work in garter stitch, beginning with a purl row and ending with a knit.

        Thumb Row 7: *P2, P2tog, rep from * to last 2 stitches, P2.

        Bind off knitwise.

Pick up and knit the 8 stitches nearest the thumb gusset; 4 from the front and 4 from the back. PM and join to work in the round.

Rows 1-7 Index Finger: Work as thumb

        Bind off knitwise.

Pick up the next 8 stitches; again, 4 from the front and 4 from the back. Work as Index Finger. Do this for the next 2 fingers.

Pick up and knit the last eight stitches – PM and join for working in the round.

Little Finger Rows 1-5: Work in garter stitch, beginning and ending with purl rows.

        Little Finger Row 6: *K2, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 stitches, K2

        Bind off purlwise.

Weave in ends. Blocking is not necessary.

Machine washable, lay flat to dry.
