Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!

Most of you will be celebrating this holiday but hunting eggs today, eh? Well we dwarves celebrate a wee bit differently. Instead of hunting them, we throw eggs at each-other and try and smash them out of the air with our axes.

Happy Dwarven Easter!

Our Adventure

Our Adventure

Apparently, all the humans decided to make a movie of our adventures. We went to go see it in theaters last year, in dwarven attire of course, all the men, elf-folk, and wizards thought us very strange, coming to see our own movie after all, but whatever. Their opinion does not matter.

Have you picked up your copy yet?

Our Hobbit's Fingerless Gloves

This is Thorin writing, and I am going to share with you today a pattern for our hobbit’s gloves – the ones that he wears during the first part of our journey. I, of course, being a strong and hardy dwarf, prefer durable leather ones, but for all of the hobbits out there, this pattern is for you.

In the below picture, it may seem like the gloves are a deep metallic blue and have full length fingers, but if you watch this behind the scenes video (which I would highly recommend), you can see at about 59:38 their true color and shape.

     What you will need:

4 4 balls of Be Sweet Bamboo in the Dark Army color, or just three if you knit from both the outside and inside of each ball.

3 size 10 double pointed needles, or size necessary to obtain gauge.

· Stitch holder, or a pair of circular needles that you can slip stitches onto to hold them.

Gauge is 15 stitches and 25 rows in garter stitch for a 4” square when using size 10 needles.

Cast on 28 stitches to DPNS, and place marker.

Work 30 rows in garter stitch (knit one row, purl the next).

        Row 31: K3, *K2tog, K3, rep from * to end.

        Row 32: Purl across.

Row 33: K3, *Kfb, K3, rep from * to end.

Rows 34-43: Work in garter stitch.

Begin knitting side to side, and work eight more rows in garter stitch. Then join again at the beginning of the 41st row.

Rows 41-48: Work in garter stitch.

Slip all stitches to a stitch holder or circular needle pair. Pick up and knit 10 stitches evenly around thumb gusset, PM at the beginning of the row.

Thumb Rows 1-6: Work in garter stitch, beginning with a purl row and ending with a knit.

        Thumb Row 7: *P2, P2tog, rep from * to last 2 stitches, P2.

        Bind off knitwise.

Pick up and knit the 8 stitches nearest the thumb gusset; 4 from the front and 4 from the back. PM and join to work in the round.

Rows 1-7 Index Finger: Work as thumb

        Bind off knitwise.

Pick up the next 8 stitches; again, 4 from the front and 4 from the back. Work as Index Finger. Do this for the next 2 fingers.

Pick up and knit the last eight stitches – PM and join for working in the round.

Little Finger Rows 1-5: Work in garter stitch, beginning and ending with purl rows.

        Little Finger Row 6: *K2, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 stitches, K2

        Bind off purlwise.

Weave in ends. Blocking is not necessary.

Machine washable, lay flat to dry.

        Abbreviations:

K – knit

P – purl

K2tog – knit 2 together

P2tog – purl 2 together

Kfb – knit front and back

PM – place marker

DPNS - double pointed needles

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Dwarvish Drawings

Good day, everyone.

This is Fili here. I finally managed to distract my brother long enough to put up a quick post on some sketches I've done.

These are just a few simple, childish drawings because I haven't gotten around to drawing much else with all our traveling, pony riding, orc fights, barrel riding, warg chases, dragon fighting, etc. Let me tell you, it can get rather tiring and take up a lot of your time.

Hobbiton

Erebor... Kili and I are both eager to see our Uncle's kingdom.

Mr. Baggins' encounter with the great Smaug.
This is a rough sketch of our Uncle Bofur.

A quick drawing of my little brother and I that I now use as a book marker.

I'll try my best to get in touch with you readers as soon as I possibly can. I am currently in the company of many Elves. I don't mind their company, though I'd prefer a different diet that's not so full of green food...

At your service always,
-Fili

Dwarf Runes

Dwarf Runes

Dwarf runes are used through-out Middle Earth.

The mark on Bilbo's door.

 Moon Runes on Thorin's map.

The rune stone that my mother Dis gave to me.

Gloin's axe has runes - which later Gimli finds in Moria, from Balin's tomb.

Dwalin's axes

Runes are easy to write, assuming you know the dwarfish alphabet. If you are not familiar with it then here are several charts to help you.

Mr. Boggin's Seed Cakes

Mr. Boggin's Seed Cakes

Thorin, Fili and I really enjoyed Mr. Boggin's seed cakes, he baked several fresh loafs one afternoon and we we wolfed them down...along with the rest of his food that was stored in his pantry. *ahem* But that's beside the point, the point is his cakes were delicious and Mr. Boggin's most graciously agreed to share the recipe with us, and we are passing it along to all our fellow dwarf, elf, hobbit, human, and so forth, friends to try.

  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 3 eggs ( I used duck eggs)
  • 2 cups flour (I used whole wheat)
  • Half a cup of seeds (I used Chia, Flax, and Poppy seeds)
  • 1/4 teaspoon each nutmeg and cinnamon
  • 1-2 teaspoons of Vanilla extract
  • 4 teaspoons Coconut Sugar (for sprinkling on top of the loaves before baking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°. Grease four 4 1/2-inch springform pans (I used two small bread loaf pans).
  2. In a large mixing bowl cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping the bowl in between additions.
  4. In a second bowl, whisk together the flour, seeds, and spices.
  5. Add half the flour mixture to the butter mixture, stirring well.
  6. Add the vanilla, combine.
  7. Add the remaining flour mixture, being sure not to overmix.
  8. Spoon batter into prepared pans. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon sugar over the top of each cake.
Bake for 35 minutes or until a tester comes out clean. Cool on wire racks.
 Cream together wet ingredients

Add in your eggs, one at a time.

Mix together your flour,

spices,

and seeds.

Butter you baking pans.

Spoon the dough into the prepared pans.

Sprinkle with Coconut Sugar.

Bake until golden brown.

Grab one of Fili's many knives and run it along the edges of the loafs and turn pan upside down, the loafs should come out with ease.

Serve with plenty of butter.

Enjoy with your cup of afternoon tea,

and lots of good dwarven company. ; )
